Goldstuck, Arthur

Goldstuck is an award-winning writer, analyst and technology commentator and speaker, providing understanding of technology issues to media and businesses globally. He has presented and been a panel moderator at events around the world, including the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
He is author of 19 books, editor-in-chief of South Africa’s first online consumer technology magazine, Gadget.co.za, and writes a weekly technology trends column for South Africa’s largest-circulation newspaper, the Sunday Times. He is co-author, with Nikki Bush, of Tech-Savvy Parenting, “A guide to raising safe children in a digital world”.
He is regularly called upon by local and international media to provide commentary on technology news, trends and events. He has appeared frequently on CNN, CNBC Africa, SABC TV and eNCA, and is the resident “tech expert” on several major radio stations, including SAFM and Cape Talk.
As an industry analyst, he heads the World Wide Worx research consultancy, leading ground-breaking market research into how change is affecting business and society. His organisation produces the most widely-accepted statistics for Internet use in South Africa and has conducted research across Africa since 2001. Arthur oversees projects ranging from ecommerce, mobile business and digital banking to the factors that make small enterprises more competitive.
Arthur has been an international judge in both the Global Mobile Awards in Barcelona and the Cannes International Advertising Festival, and has been a judge of the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards since 2011.
In 2013, The Institute of IT Professionals of South Africa presented him with the Distinguished Service in ICT Award for his contribution to the industry, and named him an Honorary Fellow of the Institute. In its citation, the Institute stated: “He is both a true stalwart and a justifiably well-known personality of the South African ICT Industry and is fully deserving of the 2013 award for Distinguished Service in ICT, having made a genuine career-length contribution to the community and the world of ICT.”
Fordyce, Bruce

Bruce Fordyce is probably best known for having won South Africa’s Comrades marathon 9 times. In that time he set 5 new course records and he has run 30 Comrades marathons to date. In addition, Bruce has won numerous other marathons including the famous London to Brighton 3 times. In the 1983 London to Brighton he set a World 50 mile/80 kilometre record of 4 hours, 50 minutes and 21 seconds. That record still remains unbroken. In 1997 he was awarded a State President’s gold award for sport from Nelson Mandela.
Most recently Bruce launched the parkrun concept in South Africa which has grown to nearly 200 Saturday morning 5km free timed runs and over 1 million registered members.
Naidoo, Kuben

Kuben is an activist and a public servant in South Africa committed to the achievement of a socially just world. He has a bachelor of science degree and a post graduate diploma in public management from Wits University and an MBA from the university of Birmingham, UK. He joined the national treasury at the beginning of 1998. Kuben headed up the budget office from 2006 to 2010 and has also done a two year stint at the UK treasury, working in their budget division.
He then headed the secretariat of the National Planning Commission between 2010 and 2013. After serving as an adviser to the governor in the South African reserve bank for two years, he was appointed in april 2015 to serve as deputy governor of the bank where he was responsible for overseeing the establishment of the prudential authority. He is also a member of the monetary policy committee and serves as the CEO of the prudential authority at the South African Reserve Bank.

Emma Sadleir is South Africa’s leading expert on social media law. The company she founded in 2014, the Digital Law Company, specialises in educating and advising corporates, employees, schools, parents, teachers, and universities on the legal, disciplinary and reputational risks of social media.
Emma’s areas of expertise include managing the legal consequences of using social media including defamation, privacy, hate speech and intellectual property; cyberbullying and harassment; sexting and pornography offences; the disciplinary consequences of using social media; personal and brand reputation management on social media; health and social media and online safety.
Much of Emma’s work involves creating social media strategies and policies for corporates and schools, drafting social media agency agreements and providing training and workshops on social media law.
Emma and her team have collectively addressed hundreds of blue-chip corporate clients and over 100,000 learners across South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, Kenya, Nigeria and the United Kingdom through educational talks and presentations. She also teaches media law to journalists and lawyers and lectures personal reputation management on various MBA programmes. Emma was an anchor for The Oscar Pistorius Trial: A Carte Blanche Channel where, for the duration of the evidence in the trial, she hosted a programme discussing social media, the law and court proceedings. Emma was retained as a legal commentator for the BBC (both radio and television) for closing argument, verdict and sentencing of the Oscar Pistorius trial.
In addition, Emma spoke at SXSW in March 2015 and has presented at the International Bar Association’s Initiative for Women Business Lawyers. She is a regular commentator on radio and television.
Emma is the co-author of Don’t Film Yourself Having Sex… And Other Legal Advice For The Age of Social Media, published by Penguin Random House in September 2014. The book was described by Professor Jonathan Jansen as “the most important textbook” a university student will buy. Emma is also the co-author of the social media section of the legal textbook, “Communications Law”, published by Lexis Nexus in January 2015.
Her second book, Selfies, Sexts and Smartphones: A Teenager’s Online Survival Guide was published by Penguin Random House in October 2017.

Apollinaire, Woundjiagué
Woundjiagué Apollinaire got a bachelor’s degree in pure mathematics from the University Ibn Zohr (Agadir-Morocco) in 2006, a master’s degree in engineering in finance and actuarial sciences from the National Institute of Statistic and Applied Economic (Rabat-Morocco) in 2009, a master’s degree in science in statistic from National Advanced School of Engineering (University of Yaounde I-Cameroon) in 2014. Since 2015, he is a Ph.D. student in Financial Mathematics at Pan African University, Institute of Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation hosted by Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Nairobi-Kenya). Currently, he is a University lecturer at the National Advanced School of Engineering (University of Maroua-Cameroon). His research interests include Financial and Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics.
Avanzi, Benjamin
Benjamin Avanzi, PhD, MAICD, is an Associate Professor at the UNSW Business School in Australia. Previously, he held academic positions Canada and Switzerland. Benjamin is a member of the ASTIN section of the IAA, a member of the Swiss Association of Actuaries, as well as an Affiliate member of the Australian Actuaries Institute. He has ongoing collaboration with major Australian non-life insurers, including Allianz, Insurance Australia Group, and Suncorp. He is an Editor of the ASTIN Bulletin, an Associate Editor of Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, as well as a member of the Editorial Board of the open access journal Risks.
Bagarry, Marc
Marc Bagarry is Group Reinsurance Chief Actuary at Groupama, and is responsible for leading the actuary team based in Paris, Cat modeling choices for the Group, including Europe Windstorm, and reinsurance pricing for the French mutuals network and International subsidiary. Marc has more than 14 years of experience in the reinsurance sector with a focus on catastrophe risk assessment. Prior to joining Groupama in 2011, he spent over 7 years in PartnerRe doing non-life reserving and P&C pricing for a wide range of territories including Japan, Middle East and the Netherlands.
Marc is a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and has a MSc in Statistics from ISUP Université Parie VI and a MSc in Applied Mathematics from IMA Université Catholique de l’Ouest.
Carrato, Alessandro
Alessandro is a qualified actuary, currently working as Regional Chief Actuary for Iberia&LatAm at Allianz SE, Munich. During his international career, he has been presenter and speaker at several actuarial conferences, focusing mainly on P&C related topics, from Risk Management to Pricing and Reserving. Since 2012, he is also a co-author of the R ChainLadder package, freely available online. In the recent years his main interests are around bridging the actuarial world to the modern data scientist techniques.
Cuypers, Frank
Frank Cuypers is a nuclear engineer, with a M.Sc. in nuclear physics and a Ph.D. in theoretical physics. He comes with a prominent scientific track record in modelling complex systems and a vast lecturing experience.
As a former Swiss Re Executive and Chief Actuary of Zurich Re in Cologne, he has accumulated a wide experience in most actuarial disciplines, which he now deploys to advise leading insurers & reinsurers with bespoke technical solutions. Moreover, numerous regulators and companies regu-larly appoint him to validate risk and solvency models.
Frank is a fully qualified Actuary. He is currently the Chairman of ASTIN and he created the CPD Committee of the Swiss Actuarial Association, which he presided for 10 years. He is also a share-holder and actuarial director of Prime Re Solutions, a general advisor and service provider for in-surers & reinsurers.
Dal Moro, Eric
Eric Dal Moro is Head of Group P&C Reserving at SCOR.
Eric has over 20 years of experience in reserving and risk management. Prior to SCOR, he worked in the consulting industry both in Paris and Zurich, and also for AXA in France, Japan and Italy in different functions. He also gained some good experience in credit and surety pricing when working at Swiss Re.
Eric has been serving as the Chairman of ASTIN Committee of the International Actuarial Association between 2014 and 2017 and is an active researcher within the global actuarial community.
Egidio dos Reis, Alfredo D.
Alfredo D. Egidio dos Reis holds a degree on management, a MSc in applied mathematics to economics and management both from ISEG (Lisbon School of Economics & Management, Technical University of Lisbon) and a PhD in actuarial mathematics and statistics from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (UK). He holds a “habilitation” in mathematics and also in management, both from ISEG. He is now Professor of Finance at ISEG, Universidade de Lisboa, researcher at CEMAPRE (Centre for Applied Mathematics to Forecasting and Economic Decision) and co-editor of the European Actuarial Journal. He is a fellow of the Portuguese Institute of Actuaries, Portuguese Mathematical Society and of the Order of Economists. At present Alfredo teaches quantitative finance, risk theory and insurance ratemaking. Alfredo’s research interests include different areas of actuarial science and risk theory, such as ruin theory and credibility. His main research has been published in ASTIN Bulletin, Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, Scandinavian Actuarial Journal and European Actuarial Journal.

Magatti, Vittorio
Vittorio Magatti is a Senior Consultant and Actuary in the P&C practice of Willis Towers Watson in Rome and has worked in the insurance market for 10 years.
In 2009 Vittorio was awarded a BA from the University of Rome (“La Sapienza”) in Statistics and Actuarial Science.
In 2015 he earned his PhD in Actuarial Science at the University of Rome (“La Sapienza”) and he occasionally works with the Sapienza and UNICAL to organize seminars for students and post-grads.

Lowther, Mickey
Mickey is a well-known retirement fund actuary and trustee who has taken a special interest in fund governance, research, and professional conduct. He has researched, published and spoken locally and internationally on retirement fund governance, risk management as well as matters of professional conduct and training.
Together with the late Prof Wendy McMillan, Mickey evolved the concept of the actuary’s Professional Promise. This led on to developing the Actuarial Society’s normative education capstone programme, and more recently outcomes-based CPD. Mickey was awarded the Society’s Murray Medal for his contributions.
Mano, Cristina
Cristina Mano is Actuary, Statistics and Mathematics with over 30 years experience in the insurance market. She has Master Degree in Statistics and she is Doctor in Science in Production Engineering, with emphasis in Credibility Theory. She has Post Graduation in Artificial Intelligence and Neural Network.
Since 2012, Cristina Mano is a Senior Consultant and Principal at Cantanhede Mano Consultoria de Atuária. Previously, Cristina was a Senior Consultant and Principal at Willis Towers Watson (former Towers Perrin) for 15 years.
She was an Associate Professor at State University of Rio de Janeiro for 27 years.

Marceau, Etienne
Etienne Marceau is full professor in actuarial science at Université Laval, a visiting professor at the Université Lyon, and an adjunct professor at McGill University. His teaching and research interests focus on various actuarial themes, including risk theory and dependence modelling. He is the author of a reference book on actuarial modelling and of more than fifty scientific articles. He has supervised 7 PhD and 27 MSc students. He is co-chair of the ACT&RISK research lab and associated editor of IME. He is member of the Quantact research lab and of three research groups (big data, applied mathematics, sustainable development).
Meissner-Roloff, Karl
Karl leads Deloitte’s non-life insurance IFRS 17 offering in Southern Africa. He is a senior actuary and insurance specialist who has been appointed as the Head of Actuarial Function to some of the largest South African Short Term insurers.
Over the last four years Karl has led a large variety of IFRS 17 projects, analysing and interpreting the standard for the South African, Mauritian and Middle Eastern insurance markets. He also advises and supports both the South African Actuarial and Accounting profession through each of their relevant IFRS17 working committees.
Middelkamp, Peter
Peter Middelkamp has studied physics in Germany and at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland. For a post-doc he moved to New York before joining the investment Merrill Lynch Derivative Products in 1998 as quantitative analyst. After three years he moved to Swiss Re in Zurich, Switzerland as a Quantitative Credit Risk Analyst. In his 18 years at Swiss Re he held various analyst and then management positions covering financial market risk, credit insurance and life & health reinsurance. His focus is financial market and credit risk modelling and also developed the internal lethal pandemic and operational risk model. He is holder of the GARP FRM.
Miehe, Perre
Pierre specializes in Non-Life Consulting, working for clients in US, Europe and Asia. He has been a member of the WATSON WYATT best estimate commission, representative of France at EIOPA on best practice regarding non-life reserves valuation, and President of the ACTUARIS/ADDACTIS scientific committee.
Pierre also specializes in actuarial Software development, with overall 20 years of experience at CREA, ERNST & YOUNG, ACTUARIS/ADDACTIS and MILLIMAN.
Actuarial associations: Pierre Miehé is an ASTIN Committee member, head of the Worlwide Non-Life Reserving Best Practice Report. Pešta, Michal
Michal Pešta is an assistant professor of probability and mathematical statistics at the Charles University, Prague. His research interests include asymptotic methods for resampling methods, weak dependence, panel data, nonparametric regression, and errors-in-variables modeling. In the recent years, he has been developing the statistical methodology for non-life insurance, mainly actuarial risk valuation and stochastic claims reserving. Michal Pešta has also utilized the skills gained during his PhD and postdoctoral stays (Hasselt University, University of Hamburg, HU Berlin, University of Alberta) to contribute to applied fields like cancer research or hydrology.
Pechon, Florian
After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 2013 and a Master’s degree in Actuarial Science in 2015, both at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Florian Pechon started his PhD in Actuarial Science in a Joint Research Initiative with the AXA Research Fund and the Université catholique de Louvain, under the supervision of Michel Denuit and Julien Trufin.
Nischke, Klaus-Peter
Klaus-Peter Nischke works as an actuarial consultant for the R+V Versicherung AG.
Born 1964 in Essen, Germany, he studied mathematics at the University of Dortmund from 1983 to 1990.
After positions as a scientific assistant and as an IT-consultant, Mr Nischke has worked for the R+V Versicherung (one of germans largest insurance groups) since 2000. Since 2011 he has worked in the risk management department of R+V’s reinsurance section R+V Re. Mr Nischke is a member of the German Actuarial Association (DAV) and has qualified as CERA. Mr Nischke is involved in two DAV-working groups dealing with issues related to enterprise risk management, in particular with the design of proper limit systems.
Rowan, Adriaan
Adriaan qualified as an Actuary with the designation of Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (F.I.A.) from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in London in 2012. On returning to South Africa he also received his Fellowship from the Actuarial Society of South Africa in 2015. Adriaan has a B.Com (Hons) from the University of Stellenbosch (2005) and is currently studying towards his MSc at the University of Cape Town. Adriaan has worked for a range of Companies, including the World Bank, Deloitte and Gen Re, and currently practices as an independent consulting actuary.
Adriaan focuses on combining Actuarial Science with Data Analytics to build predictive models that address his clients’ specific business requirements through the analysis of internal and external data. Data Analytics allows data driven decisions to be made that prioritises actions and quantifies the risk a company is facing. Actuarial Science allows you to find the best ways to address these risks and allow you to convert risks into opportunities.
Valdez, Emiliano A.
Emiliano A. Valdez, Ph.D., FSA, is a Professor of Actuarial Science in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Connecticut, USA. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and is also the interim director of the graduate programs in actuarial science at Connecticut. His academic experience includes several years of teaching and conducting research in actuarial science in three different continents: North America, Australia and Asia. His previous academic posts include working for the Nanyang Business School in Singapore and for the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. From 2013 to 2015, he was the Director of the actuarial science program at Michigan State University. He has been awarded the Edward A. Lew Award, the Halmstad Memorial Prize, and recently in 2010, the Charles A. Hachemeister Prize, in recognition for his significant contributions to the actuarial literature. His current research interest includes copula models and dependencies, managing post-retirement assets, and risk measures and capital requirements related to enterprise risk management. In addition, he has several years of industry experience working as an actuary for Connecticut Mutual in Hartford and held summer actuarial positions at Price Waterhouse.
Richman, Ronald
Ron is the Chief Risk Officer for the Africa companies in the AIG group, prior to which he was Chief Actuary for Africa for several years. His professional interests include non-life reserving, mortality modelling and the application of deep learning techniques to actuarial problems.
Wetzel, Stefan W.
Dr. Stefan W. Wetzel is Head of Actuarial & Reporting and Actuarial Function at ALTE LEIPZIGER Versicherung AG, the P&C Insurer of the ALTE LEIPZIGER-HALLESCHE group. In addition to P&C pricing, he also deals with the remaining spectrum of actuarial work in p&c insurance, as well as with the data warehouse of the company. Dr. Wetzel is a physicist and member of the DAV Committee on non-life insurance as well as of the working group on P&C pricing methology. Baskir, Adrian
Adrian is the Chair of the IAA Health Section. He was born and lived most of his life in South Africa before moving to the UK at the end of 2008. He is Chief Actuary for Bupa International Markets having previously served as the UK Chief Actuary. His span of responsibilities include Pricing, Capital and Reserving in a significant number of countries around the globe focused on Medical Expense insurance. He is very active within the actuarial profession, having been a member of the IAAHS Committee for 7 years. He served as President of the Actuarial Society of South Africa in 2006/7 and was a member of the Council of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries for 3 years
Bennett, Sarah
Sarah is a senior health care actuary in Medscheme’s Health Intelligence Unit with a keen interest in morbidity trends and in particular lifestyle changes that lead to improvements in health. Sarah previously worked for Swiss Re in London and gained international exposure to Private Medical Insurance and other health products in global markets. From 2011 to 2014 Sarah was a Features Editor for The Actuary magazine focusing on health care. Sarah thrives on innovation, enjoys taking on new challenges and has recently taken up rowing as a sport.
Childs, Barry
Barry is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and is the current chair of the healthcare committee of the Actuarial Society of South Africa. He is passionate about healthcare and provides advice to a wide range of public and private healthcare role players on matters including strategy, analytics, and policy. Areas of interest include fintech, case mix and risk adjustment, reimbursement models, quality measurement and improvement, product design, wellness and behavioural science.

Daly, Warren
Warren Daly is a healthcare actuary at Liberty Health. He is a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and has almost 15 years’ experience in the healthcare financing industry. He has previously been a consultant to medical schemes in South Africa and has worked extensively in the healthcare data analytics environment, with a special interest in provider profiling. He has been with Liberty Health for four years and heads up the Actuarial & Business Intelligence teams. He finds working in the African healthcare insurance environment both very interesting and challenging.
Diedricks, Karel

Qualified as Fellow in 2013, Karel has worked in the SA medical schemes industry for almost 10 years at Metropolitan Health. Passionate about healthcare, he has worked with a variety of role players and disciplines within the industry. He is passionate about serving the wider community. Currently he is the Treasurer at The Haven Night Shelter (NGO) and is an active member at church. His interest in business has seen him become a director of several start-ups.
Şahin, Şule
Dr. Şule Şahin completed her PhD at Heriot-Watt University, in Actuarial Mathematics in 2010. She is a lecturer at the Mathematical Sciences Department, Institute for Financial and Actuarial Mathematics at University of Liverpool, UK and also an Associate Professor at Department of Actuarial Sciences at Hacettepe University, Turkey. She worked as a visiting scholar in Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg in 2012 on a joint paper Single-factor CAPM in a multicurrency world with Prof. Robert Thomson and Taryn Reddy. They won the RGA prize for the Best Paper at the South African Actuarial Society Convention in November 2015. Her research interests are economic scenario generators, yield curve modelling, compensation for loss of earnings, mortality modelling and pension guarantees.
Harris, Roseanne
Roseanne Harris is a health actuary with over 23 years of experience in the South African health care and employee benefits field. Roseanne is Health Policy Actuary with Discovery Health and an adjunct professor in the School of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of the Witwatersrand. Roseanne served as the President of the Actuarial Society of South Africa for 2016-7 and was previously chair of the healthcare committee and NHI task team. She is currently chair of the Education Board. Roseanne is a member of the executive committee of the International Actuarial Association and vice-chair of the Health Committee.
Gregoire, Caroline
With more than 20 years of experience in the actuarial and risk management fields in international environments and in different leadership positions, Caroline now works with actuaries, risk managers and executives in the insurance industry to support them with leadership, communication, strategy and culture issues. Before starting her own business, she was head of operational risk and risk reporting for the Hannover Re Group. She is an associate member of the Swedish Actuarial Society (“Svenska Aktuarieföreningen”) and a member of the German Speakers Association. Caroline is fluent in English, French, German and Swedish.
Getz, Craig
Craig Getz is a consulting actuary with Insight Actuaries and Consultants. He is both a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (FASSA) and a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (FIA). Craig has consulted to a wide array of stakeholders across the healthcare sector. This includes medical schemes, managed care organisations, hospital groups and provider groupings. His expertise lies in the application of actuarial techniques to provide his clients with expert strategic advice.
Craig has a specific interest in product development, alternative reimbursement models, benchmarking and profiling and the identification of fraud, waste and abuse. He has overseen the development of the Insight Diagnosis Related Grouper (DRG) which is the most widely used DRG in South Africa. He has also overseen the development of a range of provider profiling tools and systems.
Hayward, Tanya
Tanya is a Consulting Actuary with Milliman’s London Health practice. Prior to joining Milliman, Tanya worked at Discovery Health in South Africa and VitalityHealth in the UK. Manning, Kevin
Kevin Manning is a principal in Milliman’s Dublin office, and joined the company in 2007. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the insurance industry in a wide variety of areas, including capital management, product development, financial reporting, risk management, marketing and new insurance company authorisations. He combines strong technical actuarial skills with strategic general management experience.
Kevin is a member of the Board of the International Actuarial Association Health Section (IAAHS) and is also actively involved in the Society of Actuaries in Ireland as chair of the PRSA Committee and a member of the Member Engagement Committee. He was for many years a member of the Society’s Healthcare Committee and has been an activie participant in a range of working parties of both the Irish and UK actuarial profession.

Murove, Charlton
Charlton Murove is the head of research at the Board of Healthcare Funders of Southern Africa. He is a qualified actuary with a strong track record in healthcare and retirement funds. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce honours degree in actuarial science from the National University of Science and Technology, Zimbabwe.
Charlton worked at Quantum Consultants and Actuaries, QED Actuaries and Consultants and Metropolitan. After Metropolitan, he was appointed as an actuarial specialist at Alexander Forbes Financial Services before joining the Council for Medical Schemes as a senior researcher. At the CMS he worked on issues affecting the medical schemes environment.
He is currently studying towards a MSc in epidemiology specialising at the University of Witwatersrand.
Nepgen, Andre
Andre has been at Discovery for 10 years and currently heads up the Global Vitality Network, a central strategic unit supporting the Group build the world’s largest behaviour platform linked to insurance – Vitality. The unit leverages the scale of Vitality globally, now in 20 countries, to build the Vitality brand through science and research; global partnerships and new technology assets.
More recently, the unit released the results of the largest study on physical activity in London through RAND Europe based on the Vitality Active Rewards with Apple Watch programme. The strength of the results were accompanied with a Pledge by the insurance network using Vitality (AIA, Ping An, Sumitomo Life, Generali, John Hancock, Manulife, Discovery) to make 100m people, 20% more active by 2025 using Vitality.
Prior to the Global Vitality Network, Andre was the Executive Associate to the Group CEO for 4 years and an Actuary at the Discovery R&D Lab. He is also a member of the BLSA Youth Policy Task Team.
Noakes, Tim
Prof Noakes studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT), obtaining a MBChB degree and an MD and DSc (Med) in Exercise Science. He is now an Emeritus Professor at UCT, following his retirement from the Research Unit of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. In 1995 he was a co-founder of the now prestigious Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA). He has been rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of SA (NRF) for a third 5-year term. In 2008 he received the Order of Mapungubwe, Silver, from the President of South Africa for his “excellent contribution in the field of sports and the science of physical exercise”.
Prof Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He has been cited more than 19 000 times in scientific literature and has an H-index of 74. He has won numerous awards over the years and made himself available on many editorial boards.
He has authored many books. In 2003 he received the UCT Book Award for Lore of Running (4th Edition), considered to be the “bible” for runners. Since 2011 he has written his autobiography, Challenging Beliefs: Memoirs of a Career, published Waterlogged: The serious problem of overhydration in endurance sports (in 2012), published The Real Meal Revolution (in 2013), co-authored with Jonno Proudfoot, David Grier and Sally-Ann Creed, and following that the child-focused version of this book, Raising Superheroes (in 2015). The latter two are now also published overseas. In 2014 he co-wrote Always Believe in Magic, with Kevin Musikanth and Jonathan Kaplan, which is the story of the UCT Ikey Tigers journey to winning the 2014 Varsity Cup. The Banting Pocket Guide was published in 2017, co-authored with Bernadine Douglas and Bridgette Allan and most recently he has co-authored Lore of Nutrition with Marika Sboros. This details his journey from prosecution to innocence.
Following the publication of the best-selling book, The Real Meal Revolution, he founded The Noakes Foundation, the focus of which is to raise funding to support high quality research of the eating plan described in the book.
He now devotes a majority of his time to promoting the low carbohydrate high fat diet, especially for those with insulin resistance, and on raising funds for research through The Noakes Foundation.
He is highly acclaimed in his field and, at age 68, is still physically active, taking part in races up to 21kms.

Ibrahim Muhanna founded i.e. Muhanna & co. (Actuaries & Consultants) in 1986; Omnilife insurance company in the UK in 1988; The Muhanna Foundation in 1994; & i.e. Muhanna & co. (Rating Services) in 2000. Prior to that, he worked in the USA and Lebanon from 1976 to 1985
He graduated from the University of Michigan (1976) with a MSc in Actuarial Mathematics. He has advised 52 insurers, 23 governments, and other clients in 38 countries. He has written several papers & delivered over 600 presentations on actuarial, healthcare, financial awareness, social justice, municipal finance & governance issues in 54 countries.
In 2007, he was awarded “The National Order of the Cedar” by the Lebanese President. The award is in recognition of his great service & devotion to the Nation.
Lowther, Mickey
Mickey is a well-known retirement fund actuary and trustee who has taken a special interest in fund governance, research, and professional conduct. He has researched, published and spoken locally and internationally on retirement fund governance, risk management as well as matters of professional conduct and training.
Together with the late Prof Wendy McMillan, Mickey evolved the concept of the actuary’s Professional Promise. This led on to developing the Actuarial Society’s normative education capstone programme, and more recently outcomes-based CPD. Mickey was awarded the Society’s Murray Medal for his contributions.

Shivani is a healthcare actuary and part-time academic. She is the co-founder and CEO of Percept – a South African multi-disciplinary consultancy driven by heart and curiosity. Taurayi (Tau) qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries almost two decades ago. Earlier in his career his domains were life product development and pensions consulting. In the last 15 years his practice area has been healthcare, both as a consultant and as an Insurance company actuary. Gobe, Zandile
Zandile Gobe holds the position of a Actuarial Analyst at General Re Corporation (Gen Re), a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. Gen Re is a holding company for global reinsurance and related operations.
Previously she headed up the Corporate Product Management team within Income Solutions for MMI Group Ltd. This team was responsible for servicing the Corporate and Public Sector market and provides support to this segment as they provide Post-Retirement Income Solutions to the respective market. Prior to that she headed up the Corporate Product Management team within Structured Solutions. She joined this team in January 2006 where she has held various positions. Herman is a qualified Actuary, a certified financial risk manager and is currently studying economics with the London School of Economics. Herman started his career at the Regulator where he was a member of the SAM steering committee. Aisling is Head of Life & Health Pricing at Swiss Re for the UK ,Ireland and Israel. Prior to joining Swiss Re in 2012, she held diverse roles in insurance and consultancy, mainly in Ireland. Robertson, Bruce
Bruce studied Business Science at UCT and joined Gen Re South Africa after graduating in 2008. He was initially involved in the pricing of group risk business but as the regulatory environment in South Africa changed he moved into a full time reserving role and in 2017 became the Head of Actuarial Control for GRSA. With the transition to the SAM environment complete, he moved to a new challenge as Regional Chief Actuary in October 2018. He is a fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa.

Steffensen, Mogens
Mogens Steffensen is Professor of life insurance mathematics at the University of Copenhagen since 2008. He has contributed to the development of market-based valuation methods in insurance. His research also covers various decision making problems within insurance and finance, and he is recently mainly interested in integrating insurance and pension decisions into classical consumption-investment problems. He participates actively in industrial discussions about accounting, solvency, and risk management and he has taken part in several research projects together with partners in the Danish pension industry. He is member of the Accounting Committee under the Danish Actuarial Association.
Terblanche, Andries
Andries is a senior partner in KPMG, the Global Lead on Systemic Risk Modelling and, until his relocation to the UK, an Adjunct Professor in Risk and Actuarial Studies at the University of New South Wales. He spent the past twelve years performing research on the root causes of traditional risk methodologies’ failures to provide ex-ante warnings of macro-economic disruptions, and advises corporates on complementary risk identification methodologies to address the complex and complicated global operating environment.
He holds a Masters of Commerce in Financial Management and Analysis (with distinction), a Masters of Science in Global Finance (with distinction) and a Doctorate of Commerce in Accounting Sciences for which he received academic colours. He studied inter alia at New York University’s Stern School of Business, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Tsinghua University in Beijing. He is a guest lecturer on risk management at the University of Technology in Sydney and, before that, was an honorary professor of Accounting at the University of Pretoria.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of Financial Services Institute of Australasia. Andries previously served on the World Economic Forum’s Risk Network which contributes to its annual Global Risk Report.
Andries has received recognition for his contributions to business from organisations based in Washington and in London. In 2008 he received the Laureate Alumni Award from the University of Pretoria, and in 2015 he was nominated by Prof Menachem Brenner, professor in advanced derivatives at New York University’s Stern School of Business and inventor of the VIX volatility index, to become a member of the international honours society Beta Gamma Sigma, in recognition of Andries’ academic achievements and the significance of his contribution to business.
In 2016 he was appointed the 12th Senior Research Fellow of the Global Institute of Finance; an acknowledgement of his contribution to the modelling of systemic risks that puts him in the company of Nobel Prize laureates and other globally recognized academics. Kyle Rudden is a consulting actuary and chartered accountant with over 30 years’ experience, primarily in the Caribbean and Central/South America. Chan, Sherry S
Chosen unanimously by New York City elected officials and union presidents in the Spring of 2015, Sherry Chan is the 5th Chief Actuary in the 100+ year history of New York City and one of the highest ranked Asian-American officials in the City’s Administration. Highly respected as the “Key Guardian of City’s Fiscal Health” for the 4th largest US public retirement system, Ms. Chan is a visionary Chief Actuary with approximately 20 years’ progressive leadership in process improvement, relationship management, financial analysis, staff development, business strategy, and operations.
In her role, Ms. Chan provides technical expertise to the City’s five retirement systems and pension funds – school administrators, teachers, firefighters, police officers and other public employees – with approximately 750,000 active and retired members and $200 billion of assets. Ms. Chan certifies the $10 billion annual required pension contributions for these retirement systems and pension funds, ensuring accuracy, and oversees a City agency with a professional staff who has decades of experience in and out of City service.
Her accomplishments include calculating costs for the City and unions to negotiate improved disability benefits for uniformed employees (sanitation, correction, police and fire), testifying before City Council on accuracy of numbers and estimates, resulting in valuation accepted by the City and unions despite math versus politics dispute. In her role as a signing actuary for Other Post Employment Benefits, such as the City’s retiree healthcare plan, Ms. Chan spearheaded the release of new Governmental Accounting Standards Board statements that instituted major industry changes for these type of financial statement disclosures.
Ms. Chan previously served as the Chief Actuarial Officer for the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and as Chief Actuary for the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio, the two largest state pension systems in Ohio with assets of approximately $100 billion and $80 billion, respectively.

With more than 20 years of experience in the actuarial and risk management fields in international environments and in different leadership positions, Caroline now works with actuaries, risk managers and executives in the insurance industry to support them with leadership, communication, strategy and culture issues. Before starting her own business, she was head of operational risk and risk reporting for the Hannover Re Group. Vincent, a qualified Actuary, started his career at Sanlam in 1996 and moved to the UK in 1999. He returned to South Africa in 2002 and co-managed one of the first fund of hedge funds in South Africa. During this time, he created and implemented investment strategies for some of South Africa’s largest pension funds. During 2007, Vincent co-founded Seed Investments, a private client wealth management business out of Cape Town, South Africa. In 2013 Vincent co-founded Seed Analytics, a fintech company that provides financial advisors with consolidated client reporting and Business Intelligence. Seed Analytics is the biggest of its kind in South Africa and has a strong team consisting of actuaries, data scientists and software developers. Vincent relocated to Toronto, Canada in 2017 with the view to market and distribute the technology in the North American market. in 2017 Vincent co-founded Kingsmere Financial Services, a technology driven financial advice platform that enables clients via its advisors to reach to their financial goals.
Liu, John Senator
John C. Liu is a New York State Senator representing a broad area of northeast Queens. He is chairperson of the Senate’s committee on New York City Education and also serves on the committees of Finance, Education, Transportation, Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and Rules. John was Comptroller of the City of New York (2010-2013) and a New York City Councilmember (2002-2009). In 2013, John was a candidate for Mayor of New York City, in lieu of running for re-election as Comptroller. Currently, John teaches municipal finance and public policy in Masters programs at the City University of New York (CUNY) and Columbia University.
The 43rd Comptroller of New York City, John Liu established an impressive record as the chief financial officer for 8.4 million residents and overseeing municipal government with an annual budget of $70 billion. John saved taxpayers $5 billion through rigorous audits of City agencies, detailed scrutiny of contracts with private companies, and refinancing of $20 billion of outstanding City bond debt. During his four-year term of office, he achieved an enviable total investment return, increasing the City’s pension asset portfolio to $150 billion. John created the nationally acclaimed online application “CheckbookNYC.com” providing unprecedented transparency in government spending. Muhanna, Ibrahim
Ibrahim Muhanna founded i.e. Muhanna & co. (Actuaries & Consultants) in 1986; Omnilife insurance company in the UK in 1988; The Muhanna Foundation in 1994; & i.e. Muhanna & co. (Rating Services) in 2000. Prior to that, he worked in the USA and Lebanon from 1976 to 1985
He graduated from the University of Michigan (1976) with a MSc in Actuarial Mathematics. He has advised 52 insurers, 23 governments, and other clients in 38 countries. He has written several papers & delivered over 600 presentations on actuarial, healthcare, financial awareness, social justice, municipal finance & governance issues in 54 countries.
In 2007, he was awarded “The National Order of the Cedar” by the Lebanese President. The award is in recognition of his great service & devotion to the Nation.
Lyn, Cathy
Since invited to serve the IAA in several capacities, Cathy’s main interest has been to strengthen international links between associations with actuaries and forging links with related professionals in a leadership role worldwide.as practicing diversity and inclusion in this demanding competitive world that forces a multidisciplinary approach.
Cathy has crafted the IACA track for this Capetown Colloquium to start IACA off on developing a top notch research arm with a collaborative programme to involve, as appropriate, Sections, FMAs, supranational partners, development banks, other professionals and communities (as appropriate) to address important issues with a global impact. This anticipates the IAA transforming itself into such a streamlined operation.
Cathy has influenced the Caribbean Actuarial Association to start this inclusive approach embracing the industry and connecting actuarial work with global mega trends for their conferences in Suriname and Jamaica and will continue this model for their 2019 event in Curacao.
Cathy has practiced in the actuarial consulting field for over 40 years in England, Jamaica and Canada with Watson Wyatt, originally R Watson & Sons, now Willis Towers Watson, and continues retirement consulting with Duggan Consulting Limited. She is a Past President of the Caribbean Actuarial Association (CAA), Past Chair of the IACA Cathy founded the Gloria Lyn Memorial Fund together with her sister, to raise the visibility of literature at UWI in memory of their mother who lectured there for 20 years. She serves on the Executive Committee for GARP Caribbean chapter. She is a former director of Trees That Feed Foundation which promotes planting of trees to improve food supply and the environment in 10 countries with emphasis on Jamaica and Haiti.
Mapolisa, Nyasha
Nyasha Mapolisa is an Actuarial Professional with 10 years experience in Life Insurance ( Product Development, Valuation, Capital Management) Pan Africa.She is the current Chair of Actuaries Without Frontiers (AWF), a committee of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA).
The core purpose of AWF is to initiate, aid and enable financial upliftment and social development through skills and resources available within the South African actuarial community. In this regard, AWF looks to serve the public interest by addressing the role of actuaries within the broader social context.

Lusani Mulaudzi is a Healthcare Actuary, Insurance company Director, an Entrepreneur, a community activist, strategist and teacher. He is a trained Design thinking practitioner and is passionate about innovation.
He has worked as a CEO of a Healthcare Administrator and Managed Care Organisation, worked as Healthcare Actuary of large Healthcare Administrator and Managed Care Organisation and as an actuarial consultant for a large insurance company in South Africa.
In 2017 he started a new entity with his partners focusing on assisting organizations to develop risk management plans with a particular focus on cash risk management.
In addition to his professional work, Lusani has been involved in the leadership structures of a political party, a church organization and a non-profit organization. He is currently the President Elect of the Actuarial Society of South Africa.

Ron Mukanya has a Master’s Degree in Sustainable Development, Planning and Management. Ron is currently a Sustainability Specialist in the Public Sector with over 15+ years combined management and international consulting work experience in sustainable development work, particularly in promoting environmental resource efficiency, climate compatible development (CCD), a green and inclusive economy, sustainable public procurement, green growth and sustainable utility services.
Nigel Sloam
After leaving Oxford University, Nigel trained in a consulting actuarial firm in London, then worked as actuary and investment manager of an overseas insurer, in a merchant banking group and finally as Technical Director to an insurance and advisory consultancy before founding his firm 40 years ago which now has offices in the UK and Europe. The firm focuses, unusually, on individuals, families and smaller rather than large groups all over the world helping people on the move and working with diverse clients in every continent including individuals, companies, housing and communal associations and Governments.
Ngwenya, Marjorie
Marjorie is Immediate Past President and a member of the Council of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). Marjorie has held executive positions at Liberty Group in South Africa and Old Mutual Africa.
Marjorie is an actuary and holder of a Sloan Masters of Leadership and Strategy from the London Business School.
Marjorie is Executive Director of the ALU School of Insurance, a social entrepreneurship venture, and she serves as a board member to several commercial and not for profit board members.

Shiriyapenga, Bigknown “Biggie”
Biggie works at Old Mutual as an Actuarial Supervisor and is currently based in Cape Town, South African. He began his career in Harare Zimbabwe more than 15 years ago. He has a BSc (Hons) in Applied Mathematics and is also studying towards qualifying as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.
Although Biggie is not a subject expert in the area of sustainability and climate change, he has the passion to learn and participate in discussions relating to this area. Biggie participated in IFoA’s SDG webinar last year and explored the role for actuaries in achieving the SDGs. Being a “Capetonian”, he recently experienced consequences of climate change when the City of Cape Town was almost running out of drinking water. This experience has further increased his interest in the area of sustainability and climate change.
Rudden, Kyle
Kyle Rudden is a consulting actuary and chartered accountant with over 30 years’ experience, primarily in the Caribbean and Central/South America. After working with Price Waterhouse as an auditor for six years, and becoming a partner in an international actuarial consultancy, he set up his own consultancy in 1997. His firm focuses on the practical application of international financial reporting and actuarial standards in the developing world. In addition to IFRS, Kyle has been appointed or consulting actuary to pension plans, life and non-life insurers reporting under UK, US, Canadian and Dutch influenced GAAP.
van den Brink, Roland
Roland van den Brink has over 30 years of experience in the pensions industry where he held both investment-related as well as senior management positions. He is founder of TrigNum and currently works for Appolaris, a pension services organization.
Roland supports the community by being involved in various leadership functions like President of the Royal Duch Actuarial Society, Council member of the International Actuarial Association and Vorsitzender der Gesellschafterversammlung of the European Actuarial Academy GmbH. Alonso-García, Jennifer
Jennifer Alonso García joined the Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance (EEF) as an Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen in July 2018. Previously she was a Senior Research Associate at CEPAR, where she is now Associate Investigator. She completed her studies in mathematics in Spain and Germany, and received her PhD from the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium in 2015. She is also an IA|BE Qualified Actuary of the Belgian Institute of Actuaries.
Her research combines the areas of actuarial science and household, pension and quantitative finance to study the design, risk-sharing and financing of funded and pay-as-you-go retirement income schemes. Her past, current and future research projects are all developed around the following overarching question: “How can we develop sound retirement income schemes that are fiscally sustainable and attractive for participants in an ageing environment?” During her PhD she studied both the fiscal sustainability and adequacy of pay-as-you-go financed defined contribution public pension schemes. Her research has been published in leading international journals, including the European Journal of Finance, Quantitative Finance, Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, Scandinavian Actuarial Journal and the ASTIN Bulletin.
Jennifer is currently involved in research projects on the financial decision making of households during retirement, life expectancy inequality and design and risk management of equity-linked retirement income products.
Arnold, Séverine
Séverine Arnold (-Gaille) is Professor in Actuarial Science at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. Besides a PhD in Actuarial Science, she has a Certificate in Population Study from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Her research focuses on longevity risk/mortality modeling, with a particular interest in cause-specific mortality rates, and more recently on social security financial systems. She is currently the project leader on a three-year research project on Cause-specific mortality interactions. She is a member of the International Actuarial Association (IAA) Life Section Committee and the IAA Mortality Working Group.
Cowling, Charles
Charles is the Chief Actuary of JLT Benefit Solutions. He is also Chairman of the Pensions and Employee Benefits Committee of the International Actuarial Association and sits on the Executive Committee of the IAA.
Charles is a member of the Council of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and was Chairman of their Pensions Board from 2008 to 2010 and also led the UK Actuarial Profession’s research into the use of discount rates.
In 2013-14, Charles was Master of the Worshipful Company of Actuaries where his principal focus was the encouragement of charitable and education activities. He is still running marathons and raising money for charity.
Economou, Costa
Mr. Costa Economou is a co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Colourfield Liability Solutions (Pty) Ltd, South Africa’s largest Liability Driven Investment Management Company and also the leading provider of goals-based investment solutions. He is also a former Commissioner to the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office-Bearers, an appointment made by the President of South Africa.
Formerly, he served as an Executive Head and Director at one of South Africa’s largest employee benefit financial serves companies, where he worked for 18 years. In his role there, he was responsible for Innovation, Business Development, Sales and Marketing, and also headed up a number of their specialist investment consulting divisions. He was also the Statutory Actuary to some of South Africa’s largest corporate and municipal sponsored pension funds.
In addition to being an Actuary, Mr. Economou holds an MBA in Finance and Economics (with Honours) from the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma – an association of high academic achievers amongst leading colleges and universities across the world. Mr Economou is also a CFA Charterholder, having qualified in 2013 as well as a CAIA Charterholder, having qualified in 2014.
Mr. Economou was formerly a Council Member of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and still serves on the Actuarial Society’s Retirement Matters Committee where he is Deputy Chairman and Chairman-elect. He has also served on the Actuarial Society’s Accounting Disclosures, Surplus Legislation and Member Services Committees.
He is fanatical table tennis player and a very committed Chelsea FC football fan! He loves playing tennis and listening to music. He is also the very proud father of twins!
Flici, Farid
Farid is an actuary, graduated in 2006 from the National High School of Statistics and Applied Economics of Algiers. In 2011, he obtained his PhD in Statistics in 2017 from the same institution.He joined the Center for Research in Applied Economics in the mid-2012. He creadted the Actuarial Demography Team at CREAD dedicated to life insurance, social security and retirement related issues.He is an expert-member of the National Comittee for Population belonging to the Algerian Health Ministry and a member of the technical committee of the Multi Indicators Cluster Survey (wave 6) by UNICEF-Algiers. Fukumoto, Satoshi
Satoshi Fukumoto is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Japan and the Japanese Society of Certified Pension Actuaries.
He specializes in calculating defined benefit corporate pension and Defined Benefit Obligation. He have calculated the settlement of hundreds of companies so far.
He works for the Japanese leading life insurance company.
Previously in the life insurance field, he was involved in cash flow analysis using big data.
Hansen, Carl
Carl Hansen is International Director for the BWCI Group in Guernsey, Channel Islands. He qualified as a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (US) in 1996 and earned a Diploma in International Employee Benefits in 2001. He is a Certificate Member of the Pensions Management Institute (UK), having completed the PMI’s Certificate in DC Governance. Over the last 10 years, he has been a regular participant in International Actuarial Association colloquia and other section activities. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Pensions, Benefits and Social Security (PBSS) section of the IAA. His work focuses on international actuarial and other consultancy services to multinational employers. During his career, Carl has had in depth experience with retirement plans and other benefits issues in the US and many other jurisdictions around the world. He has traveled extensively for business, and he has worked in the US, the UK, and Guernsey.
Carl also serves as Executive Director of Abelica Global. In this role, he is responsible for all of the day-to-day activities for managing the international organisation for which BWCI is the Channel Islands representative.

Anca Jijiie is a PhD student in Actuarial Science at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Management and a Master’s degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. Her research focuses on pension systems in general, with a recent emphasis on social security schemes and their actuarial fairness.
Levitan, Shaun
Shaun Levitan is a Co-founder and executive director of Colourfield Liability Solutions (South Africa’s largest liability-driven investment manager). He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and a CFA Charter holder. Shaun pioneered asset liability modelling techniques in South Africa in the early 2000s and has always had a passion for using quantitative techniques to mitigate institutional liability obligations which forms a key part of his day to day responsibilities at Colourfield. Shaun has been working with Nobel Prize Laureate Robert C. Merton on a goals-based investment framework for defined-contribution funds since 2015 and has successfully implemented the approach on large schemes.
Marcelloni, Raffaello
Raffaello Marcelloni is an Italian fully qualified actuary.
He started his career at the Actuarial Department of INAIL (National Workers’ Compensation Authority). After a four-year working experience at INPS (National Social Security Institute), he is currently working again at INAIL.
He is the representative actuary of ISOA (Italian Institute and Board of Actuaries) in the Task Force on Adequacy of Pensions of AAE, as well as in the Social Security Committee of IAA.
Within the SSC, he is currently leading the Working Group on Compensation Programs.
He has published several papers for the Italian “Employment injuries and occupational diseases journal”.
Alexandre, Allegrezza
Allegrezza Alexandre is an actuarial analyst with 2 years of working experience in second pillar pensions working at Willis Towers Watson Zurich. He has recently started a new position as senior consultant at PwC Zurich in actuarial department. He is also a member of the Swiss association of actuaries (SAA) and a CFA Level II candidate. He is specialized in actuarial valuations of pension obligations under Swiss-GAAP, IFRS and US-GAAP. He is also in charge of internal tool developments and process improvements. He fluently speaks French, German, English, Luxembourgish and Italian. Nagashima, Bui
Bui Nagashima specializes in the analysis of actuarial valuation of pension plans and plan design.
At the international consulting company, he has led many plan design projects for multinational and domestic companies. Also, he is currently responsible for the retirement benefit survey. Prior to joining the consulting company in 2015, he previously worked for the pension department of a Japanese leading trust bank, where he was involved in funding/accounting valuations and plan design projects.

Symeonidis, Georgios
George (Georgios) Symeonidis is an experienced Board Member with a demonstrated history of working in the Hellenic Regulatory Authority for Pensions. He is skilled in Actuarial Mathematics, Pension Economics and Pension Fund Administration. He comes from a strong analytical background and is now a Doctor of Philosophy candidate (PhDc) at the University of Piraeus, focusing on Economics of Insurance, Actuarial Models. He is a member of the Ageing Working Group.
Some of his career highlights in Greece feature evaluating and reforming the Social Security system since 2008, designing a balanced NDC system for the secondary pension, regulating the Occupational pension funds and taking part in the Trilogue process for the IORP II directive.
He has been invited to speak on pensions, among other conferences, in the World Pension Summit (2013, 2015 and 2016), the 6th World Bank Pension and Savings conference (2014) and the International Actuarial Association (IAA) Colloquium for Pension Benefits and Social Security (PBSS) (2015 and 2017).
His valuation on a new pension reform (NTS proposal) for Greece won the Best Practical Paper Award in the PBSS/IACA colloquium of the IAA in June 2017.

Vigoureux, Edmond
Edmond Vigoureux is a Senior Actuarial Manager at QED Actuaries & Consultants where he heads the Special Project division.
Edmond started his actuarial career in the Life Insurance department at QED in 2010. He qualified as a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa in 2014. After a 13-month stint at Guardrisk Life Insurance Company, he rejoined QED in his current position.
The Special Projects division personifies QED’s cornerstones: Professionalism, Excellence and Insight. The division focuses on research and development and enhancing QED’s client offering.
van Wyk, Brnic
Brnic van Wyk leads the development of the asset/liability framework for QSuper, which focusses on processes and governance structures for default defined contribution investment objectives and strategies. This includes the analysis of member data as it pertains to understanding the investment liabilities of default members. His responsibilities include monitoring Australian and international research and contributing to the fund’s strategy and product development for both the accumulation and retirement phases. Brnic is a dual qualified actuary, PBSS Board member, CIMA charter holder and serves on a number of international advisory boards, think tanks and industry working groups.

Helene is a PhD student in Actuarial Sciences under the supervision of Professor Pierre Devolder at the University of Louvain in Belgium.
