Sam is a retired consulting actuary whose interests span insurance, social insurance, valuation, accounting, demography and the environment. Prior to his retirement in 2014, he provided actuarial consulting and audit services to a wide range of life, health and property & casualty insurance companies, self-insureds and government agencies.

He served as President of the Society of Actuaries and chair of numerous committees of the SOA, International Actuarial Association (IAA), American Academy of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society. He was the author of the SOA book on Life Insurance Company Expenses. He previously served as co-vice-chair of the IAA’s Population Issues Working Group and is the vice-chair of the IAA’s Resources & Environment Working Group. He is a member of the SOA’s Longevity and Living to 100 Committees and the IAA Mortality Working Group. He has served on four technical panels on the U.S. Social Security and Medicare systems. He has also contributed several papers to the North American Actuarial Journal on the topics of accounting, mortality, smoking and obesity.”
